Surprise Chocolate Chip Brownies

I love chocolate.  Deep, dark, rich chocolate. The kind of chocolate most nutritionists are now saying is good for you. Here’s why:

  • Dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more), is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health.
  • Made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet.
  • Studies show that dark chocolate (not milk chocolate) can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease.

Sounds good, right?  It is, but… (and, there’s always a but)… you still have to be careful how much you eat…those pesky calories are still there, and can really help to add on pounds.

As I continue to emphasize plant-based foods, I’m finding some interesting recipes. I found this one and it had two surprising ingredients, which I will leave you to discover for yourself.

Surprise Chocolate Chip Brownies

Lots of protein, lower in sugar and fat, yummy!

I will say one thing…I cannot honestly state that these brownies can stand up to say, Zingerman’s brownies, because they won’t. But for anyone who is counting calories, trying to avoid sugar, staying away from simple carbs, or looking to reduce fat in your diet, give these a try. They are really very tasty.

I did some blind taste tests with people who can be fussy and know good food. I got three out of three thumbs up!

Surprise Chocolate Chip Brownies

  • Servings: 8
  • Difficulty: Easy

  • 15 oz black beans drained and rinsed
  • 2 whole bananas
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup almond butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla or almond extract
  • 1/2 cup dry oats
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate, chocolate chips


  1. Preheat oven to 350º
  2. Grease and 8×8 inch baking pan and set aside
  3. Combine all ingredients through the vanilla extract and blend in a food processor or blender
  4. Pour into a bowl and mix in the oats and chocolate chips
  5. Pour into the prepared pan
  6. Bake for 30 minutes or until you can stick a toothpick through. Let cool before serving
